Aloha from Ohau again

We are back on the island of Ohau after spending a few days on the big island. The Big Island of Hawaii just might be the prettiest place on earth. The big island is more than twice the size of all the other islands put together and with only 1/10 of the population of all the islands. It is a 5 hour drive to go all the way around. There are two 13,000' mountains and a smaller active volcanic mountain.

We stayed in Volcanos National Park. At night we were able to see the lava flow on the side of the mountain and the steam plume as the lava hit the ocean. The lava creates beautiful black sand beaches, where rare green sea turtles bask in the sun. The island also has white sand beaches and green sand beaches.

The sky is clearer here than any place on earth and on Mauna Kea mountain there are observatories and telescopes. We didn't go that high, you need a 4-wheel drive to drive to the very top of the mountain. In the park, away from any town lights, the sky is crystal clear and the number of visible stars is amazing.

Some of the best diving and snorkling is around this island. Some are fortunate enough to see dolphins, octopi, sea turtles, and whales while snorkling or diving. We saw brightly colored coral and lots of bright, tropical fish. The water is so clear in places, you can see down to the bottom in 200' water.

Along the east coast are lush rainforests with numerous waterfalls. Rainbows are almost a daily occurence. The flowers are bright and beautiful.

We will spend the next couple of days on Waikiki Beach. We will update again soon.

Taken 8 Sep, Umama Falls on the Island of Hawaii. The Akaka falls were more impressive. But this place is beautiful. Posted by Picasa

Salmon that have spawned, looking pretty rough.  Posted by Picasa

This marks the border between Canada and US just north of Hyder, AK. Lots of mines in BC the trucks have to drive thru the US to get the mining areas in BC.  Posted by Picasa

Salmon Glacier, In BC, feeds into Hyder, AK. Very pretty place.  Posted by Picasa

Glacial waterfall going to Stewart, BC/Hyder, AK. Beautiful drive. Hyder, AK is the only town on the Alaska panhandle you can drive to. They have customs going into Canada from Hyder but not entering the US from Canada Posted by Picasa

Sept 4th, Evening

Aloha,
We're doing great. Went to a Luau, drove around the Island sight seeing, hit the local flea market and went swimming at a few beaches. This place is great. Alot of the beaches we're full (it being labor day weekend) but we found some that had space. Housing is very expensive. Stopped at a few open houses, prices were a bit out of our price range. ($976K - 1.5 Mil) Oh well. Guess we'll keep looking. LOL. The 5th we fly to the Big Island of Hawaii. It will be a great time. Will update when able. Yes, we will post more pictures.

Sept 2nd. In SFO Airport awaiting Hawaii....

Hello All,
We're doing well. Had to buy airline tickets to Hawaii. Got a great deal. The MAC flight kept getting pushed back. I jumped the gun and bought tickets to the Big Island thru hotwire and are not refundable. Lessoned learned. We'll be in Hawaii until the 14th. Then we'll visit friends in Washington. Then start down the west coast.

Looks like we'll be advoiding New Orleans. Not sure what will show up on the map for visiting. Time will tell.

Look forward to hearing from you all.

Take care..
